We are honored to be designing a new garden and public gathering space at the historic Codman Burying Ground, as well as general improvements to the cemetery. For the concept phase, we are partnering with COG Design. Established in 1848 in Dorchester by prominent Bostonian, John Codman, the 3+ acre burying ground was part of the original Garden Cemetery Movement and has numerous heritage oaks and maples.

The original cemetery layout is in the shape of angel’s wings, seen here in the 1927 plan update by landscape architect Harry Guleison. We plan to honor this history and align with the Garden Cemetery ethos in our concept design framework. We can’t wait to work with the community to create a space that serves them as a public gathering space, natural respite, and place to memorialize historic and newly interred souls. Learn more about this historic cemetery at their website, and stay tuned for Spring 2021 design updates!
