In the historically Italian neighborhood of South Boston a small community of homeowners banded together to purchase a plot of land they have used as a communal yard for decades. Through their community efforts, they blocked a developer from placing a mid-rise development on this informal shared yard and recreation space. Goode Landscape Studio was then hired to design a more formalized park space to better serve the needs of this community. Goode developed an updated concept plan based on the plan developed by COG Design in 2019. They worked closely with the neighborhood and the Barnard Place Park board to finalize the design and bring it through construction documents and full implementation. The final park packs a lot into 2,000 square feet. It offers a small bocce court, shade trees, native pollinator gardens, herb gardens, flexible permeable plaza space, and engraved memorial benches. The benches honor two city of Boston firefighters who passed away, but lived in the neighborhood. Barnard Place Park is open to the public and proving to be a cherished community space. It provides a living classroom for the nearby Boys and Girls Club, a place to relax and gather for the neighborhood, and a verdant haven for pollinators in the city.
